The 3 Secrets to Get More Energy Now – Part I

by Laurie Erdman on May 14, 2012

Do you want more energy? Yes!

When do you want it? Now!

Yes, it could be a protest song.  Give me more energy and give it to me now.

If you answered yes, you are in good company. I have been traveling all over the Washington D.C. region lately asking people if they want more energy. The answer is an unanimous YES!

I also see these same people downing sodas, 5 hour energy drinks and even yerba mate energy shots.  Bleck!

But something doesn’t compute. If soda, coffee, 5 hour energy drinks and even organic yerba mate don’t work, then what does?

Is there anything out there that give me not just 5 hours, but 12 or even 16 hours of energy?

I have spent the last 2 years figuring this out.  How was I able to go from fatigued and sugar and caffeine addicted to running a business while working a day job and going back to school without collapsing or blowing out my adrenals?  How did I do that?

When I walked across fire last month, the beginning of the true answer came to light. I’ve been writing feverishly ever since to get it all down.

Instead of holding it all back from you until it’s in final book form, I wanted to start sharing with you hat I have been discovering so you can learn and energize with me.

In today’s installment, I want to introduce you to the concept I have been working with that underlies not just mine massive energy levels, but the astounding energy levels of other really successful people.

I am currently calling my philosophy The 3 Pillars of Energy Creation. This philosophy is based on everything I’ve learned from my own life experience, to my observations of my clients, to my years of research and education, as well as, my observation of the human condition. Across the board there are 3 things that each one of us require to experience maximum energy. Without all 3, our energy is less than its potential and our life is less than fabulous.

The 3 Pillars of Energy Creation Are . . .

Fuel Your Body

Fuel Your Mind

Live Your Purpose

These pillars are simple in their complexity. Each one is a doorway to living a fulfilled life. Each one is essential for a fully energized, passionate life.

We all know someone who eats a “perfect” diet but is wanting for energy.  We all know people who are positive and spiritual, yet fatigued. We even know people who love their job, but are fueling their lives on sugar, caffeine, alcohol or worse.

So what gives? Why the fatigue? The lackluster? The wanting? The wondering if there is more?. . . One of the pillars is missing.

There is so much to say about each pillar. But before I get in them in any depth, I want to briefly introduce you to what is become the overriding philosophy of my life’s work and the work I do with my clients.

Fuel Your Body

Energy starts at the cellular level and how we feed our cells and mitochondria. That’s why my mantra is alkalize to energize.

What we eat is the foundation of our energy output and has been the primary focus of this blog. Fueling your body for energy is about eating high energy, nutrient dense, alkalizing foods. Its about removing energy draining foods like sugar, gluten, dairy, excessive meat consumption and artificial sweeteners.

I teach the foundation of fueling your body in the Get Up & Go Diet Bootcamp, as well as the Anti-inflammatory Diet 101 class. I’ll also be diving deeper into Fueling Your Body in this Get More Energy Now series.

Fuel Your Mind

Our thoughts affect every cell in our body.  As as Bruce Lipton refers to it, this is the biology of belief.

Our thoughts can make us happy or they can make us sick. Our thoughts and pent up emotions can turn cancer genes on . . . of off. Yet I talk to many who don’t believe they can change their thoughts. They believe our thoughts just are.

Not true.

Thoughts are a by product of our belief system. Our thoughts will always be in line with your beliefs until we change them.

What are your beliefs? Who do you believe you are?  What do you believe is required for you to be successful? Or healthy?  Or happy? All your beliefs play into whether you have the energy and life you want.

Consider a person diagnosed with stage 4 cancer.  They are told they have 3 months to live and that there is no cure.  How likely do you think it is they will be living 4 months from now?  Of course, it depends. If they believe what the doctor tells them – that they only have 4 months to live, than it’s not very likely. In fact it is likely that they will not be around in 5 months.  Dr. Bernie Siegel has shown us the truth of this paradigm.

Yet if this same person has the belief that they will be able around to see their 16 year old daughter graduate from high school, that person has increased their odds of living a long and happy life. They believe they will be around. Of course, this belief also makes it more likely they take action to stop the cancer. They will do what ever it takes to live in alignment to that belief of being around to see their daughter graduate.

When people learn I’ve been diagnosed with MS and they seeing me walking in heels and living symptom free, the first thing they want to know is what I ate. I cringe. Yes, how I fueled my body has been important.  But eating kale would have done very little if I believed I would end up in a wheelchair. Instead, I chose to believe I could do something about the diagnosis. I believed that by taking action, not only on my diet, but on everything in my life, including my beliefs and my thoughts, the result would be different. In fact, this belief made a huge difference.

Live Your Purpose

We all have a purpose in this life.  From raising amazing kids, to creating art, to contributing our talents to a start-up, to volunteering for a cause. The possibilities are endless.

Yet many folks believe they don’t have the time.

I know how it is to be so busy on the hamster wheel of life to pursue the things we love, i.e., the things that give us energy.

How do you know if something gives you energy? Do you want to tell everyone you know about it? Do you dream about that thing when you sleep?  Do you find it consumes your thoughts or that you fantasize about it when you have a rare free moment? Is there something that makes you angry when you see it happening? These are all indications that that thing is your purpose.

Living your purpose doesn’t mean you have to quit your day job to pursue it. There are many stories of authors who worked a day job and at night penned a master piece.  Or maybe there is your co-worker who makes the time to volunteer at a homeless shelter every week, you know the one who glows when she talks about it.

This is purpose. This is living an energizing, anti-inflammatory lifestyle.

From hobbies to avocations and from side businesses to entrepreneurs, we all have something that makes us want to get out of bed in the morning.

Take my story for example.  The part of my story that occurred before leaving my day job and becoming a full time health coach. My attorney day job was not my purpose, nor my passion. But in 2003, I signed up for a pottery class.  But my art as purpose didn’t really take root until I was diagnosed with MS in 2009.  In 2010, I spent almost 2000 hours in the studio.  That simple decision led to budding artist career with published articles and my work being exhibited around the country. I was completely consumed. I had found my purpose, at least a facet of it, and that was to bring beauty into the world by transforming mud into artistic functional pottery.

When you discover your passion and purpose, you are consumed and energized by it. Sure you still have to do the laundry and pay bills, but all of that becomes just a part of the background as your life is lit up by your purpose.

When you want to double or triple your energy. . .  When you want to overcome dis-ease. . . the best thing to do is to work the 3 pillars. The 3 pillars are the foundation of my Fatigued to Fabulous SystemTM where I take people through the steps to live a fabulous life free of dis-ease, overwhelm and fatigue. That means fueling your body with energizing, alkalizing food, fueling your mind with energizing thoughts and beliefs, and living your purpose.

How do live the 3 pillars? Are you fueling your body for energy? Are your beliefs and thoughts energizing? Are you living your purpose?

With love and energy,

Is Sugar Toxic?

by Laurie Erdman on May 7, 2012

What?  Is this going to be another article on the evils of sugar?

Yes, but not exactly.

Sure sugar is really bad for us, especially in the quantity and quality we consume it.

It’s hidden everywhere. It’s in bread to pasta sauce to salad dressings. Not to mention that we eat more cookies, pies, cakes, sodas and ice cream than ever before.  The fact is, this adds up. Depending on the source, we eat 22 to 46  teaspoons of the white stuff PER DAY.

Sure sugar contributes to cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis and auto-immune disease.

You knew that right? Illness and dis-ease are not the result of a medication deficiency. Illness and dis-ease are not even the result of a genetic pre-disposition. The food we eat, the thoughts we think and what we do with our life shape our health.

Sugar gives you energy . . .

but then it leaves you wanting more . . . and more.

You’re here because you want more energy. So I’m here to tell you that sugar will give you more energy. That’s why you reach for the sugary snack at 2 p.m. when you need a post-lunch boost.

The real problem begins at 3 p.m.  I call it the “flat forehead syndrome.” You know it. It’s when you are so tired you can’t think and you can barely keep your eyes open.  Is this a coffee deficiency? Is this sleep deprivation? Is this because you didn’t have enough protein at lunch.  No. No. NO!

The flat forehead syndrome is related to that sugar you had the hour before.  The spike of energy you experienced at 2 p.m. overexerted your pancreas, your adrenals and your thyroid. It’s now time for them to rest.

But you have things to do. So you reach for the coffee.  And thus the sugar roller coaster ride continues. Up and down. Up and down.

Getting off the sugar roller coaster

The question I’m asked most often is how to get off the sugar roller coaster. Most people think it is a question of will power.

But I can tell you it has little to do will power and more to do with creative power. Creative power is about bringing all aspects of sugar cravings to the table. What’s that mean?

  • Creative power means:
  • Stop eating foods that trigger sugar cravings.
  • Doing stuff that gives you pleasure but doesn’t involve sugar.
  • Start eating foods that will give you energy so you don’t have to reach for the sugar.
  • Doing stuff that nourishes your soul.

In other words, the key to getting off the sugar roller coaster is to detox the right way.  Going cold-turkey doesn’t work. You probably know that already, so this is just a reminder.

Detoxing the right way acknowledges that our body and mind are programmed to crave sugar. Detoxing the right way works with our body to ease it off sugar and break the cycle. Detoxing the right way puts good stuff into your life so you barely notice the sugar is gone.

And in case you need another reminder of why it’s so important to free yourself from sugar prison, check out this 60 Minutes segment.  It’s eye-opening.

Then join me for the Super Sugar Shake Down on May 29th. It’s a detox program designed to be quick, easy and lasting.

Pretty powerful stuff, huh?  Do you have a sugar story? If so, share it in the comments below.

With energy, love and light,
